Darryl Jacob retires from the saddle with no regrets after pulling away in “perfect fashion” following his 31st and final Grade 1 win on Saturday.
The 41-year-old, who has struggled with injuries in recent months, announced he would end his 25-year career after guiding Impaire Et Passe to success in the Faugheen Novice Chase in Limerick.
It was fitting that Jacob finished the team in double green for owners Simone Meunier and Isaac Suede, who have retained his services for the past 11 years.
“It was the perfect way to end my career,” Jacob said. Sky Sports Racing. “Everyone knew this would be my last year but I really wanted to come back from the injury in time for Christmas.
“I don’t think I could have improved that ride on Impaire Et Passe – a Grade 1 winner for Simon and Isaac. That’s the only thing I wanted this year.
“Coming back to Leopardstown, where I had so many great days, was a good feeling. I wanted to go out on my terms and do it my way.”
Jacob’s career includes victories on the biggest stages, including the 2012 Grand National with Neptune Collonges, as well as numerous victories aboard the likes of Bristol De Mai and Sceau Royal.
When asked about the best horse he has ever ridden, Jacob said: “I’ve had a lot of great days so it’s hard to pick one but on a CV the Grand National is up there.
“L’Ami Serge winning the Champion Hurdle was very tough, and Bristol De Mai winning a second Betfair Chase title when he beat Might Bite and Native River was a huge moment.
“I had 31 Grade 1 winners, I won the Irish Hennessy, the English Hennessy on Diamond Harry, Reeve di Sevola won the Long Walk Hurdle, and Sew Royal won 15 races for me, great Grade 1s. I was very lucky.
“I never thought I would achieve what I have. I can honestly say I’ve never been the most natural of riders, as everyone knows I’m tall, but the one thing I’ve done is put my heart and soul into it.
“I emptied the tank. I have no regrets at all, I gave everything to the game.
“When you work hard and put your mind to it, I am completely convinced that you can achieve anything you want.”
